Poníky sa rozdeľujú presne tak isto, ako kone: na Teplokrvníky, Chladnokrvníky a Plnokrvníky.
Shetlandský Pony-(Teplokrvník, Škótsko, 85-105cm)
Hoci je najstarším plemenom v celom spojenom kráľovstve, patrí k najsilnejším poníkom. Unesie aj dospelého človeka. Má pevné plecia, silné krátke nohy, hustú hrivu a chvost. Má aj veľké nozdry, vďaka ktorým sa vzduch, ktorý vdýchne, ohreje ešte pred tým, ako sa dostane do pľúc.
Waleský Horský Pony-(Teplokrvník, Wales, 120cm)
Tento poník, ktorý je v plemennej knihe Waleskej spoločnosti chovateľov poníkov a malých koní zapísaný v sekcii A, sa považuje za najkrajšie zo všetkých plemien poníkov na svete. Má kompaktné telo s hlbokým hrudníkom, peknú oblúkonosú hlavu, výrazne sklonené plecia a štíhle nohy. Horský poník je veľmi otužilý a po celý rok ho možno držať vonku. Waleských plemien existuje viacero. Patrí k nim aj waleský pony (sekcia B, obr. 2), a waleský pony typu cab (sekcia C, obr.3), ktorý je väčší (132cm) a možno ho tak použiť na rozličné práce. Je výborným skokanom. Spoznáme ho podľa dlhších nôh a dlhších jemných štetiek na sponkách.
Connemarský Pony-(Teplokrvník, Írsko, 122-142cm)
Tento húževnatý a statný poník je jediným pôvodným írskym plemenom aj napriek tomu, že ho vyšľachtili už pred 2500 rokmi. V súťažiach je rýchli a inteligentný a je aj vynikajúci skokan. Spoznáte hopodľa malej a úhľadnej hlavy, dlhých zadných nôh a výrazne sklonených pliec, ktoré sú ako stvorené na jazdenie.
Fjordský Pony-(Teplokrvník, Nórsko, 130-142cm)
Tohto poníka spoznáte veľmi ľahko. Na nohách má zebrie pruhy a veľmi hustú dvojfarebnú hriu, ktorú má od čias Vikingov strihanú nakrátko tak, aby mu stála vzpriamene. Tento silný poník sa používa na ťahanie a nosenie ťažkých nákladov. Fjordský pony je veľmi odvážny.
Dartmoorsky Pony (obr. 1), Newforestský pony (obr. 2) a Exmoorsky Pony (obr. 3)-(Teplokrvník, Anglicko, 122-142cm)
Tieto poníky sú potomkami divých plemien, ktoré žili na anglických kopcoch a slatinách. Najstarší z nich je exmoorsky pony, vyskoký 122 cm. Má jedinečné znaky, ktoré nemá žiaden iný koník ani poník, napríklad 7 stoličiek. Veľmi pdobný je rovnako vysoký dartmoorsky pony. Toto plemeno nežilo až v takej izolácii ako exmoorsky pony, preto nemá ani jeho zvláštne znaky. Newforestský pony je vemi všestranný. Má rovnako húževnatú povahu ako predošlé dve plemená, je však ovela vyžší, meria 142 cm.
